The Significance of Maundy Thursday – A New Commandment to Love
As we walk through Holy Week together, today we pause to reflect on Maundy Thursday and its profound meaning for every follower of Jesus.
The word “Maundy” comes from the Latin mandatum, meaning “commandment.” It points directly to the words Jesus spoke to His disciples in the Upper Room:
“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” John 13:34-35 (ESV)
Everything Jesus did and said in His final hours on earth carries tremendous significance, not only for Christians, but for all people.
John chapter 13 opens with these powerful words:
“Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart out of this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.” John 13:1 (ESV)
Knowing His time had come, Jesus got up from the table, laid aside His outer garments, took a towel, and began to wash His disciples’ feet. In this humble act, He gave us a living demonstration of how to love and serve one another.
Then came the new commandment: to love one another as He has loved us. Not merely as we love ourselves, or as we would like to be loved—but with the same sacrificial, selfless, perfect love that Jesus poured out for us.
Only by His love flowing through us can we love this way. Only by the power of His Holy Spirit living within us can we begin to reflect His perfect love.
Later, Jesus prayed to the Father for all who would believe in Him:
“The glory that you have given me I have given to them, that they may be one even as we are one…” John 17:22 (ESV)
Jesus is praying for a unity among His people that mirrors the perfect oneness of the Father and the Son, an impossibility in our own strength, and even beyond our full comprehension. Yet because the Son of God Himself prayed it, this prayer is being answered and will ultimately be fulfilled.
As we remember Maundy Thursday, we want to encourage you to intentionally step into Jesus’ last hours. Reflect deeply on His actions, His words, and His prayers. Let the humility of the foot-washing, the power of the new commandment, and the beauty of His high priestly prayer stir our hearts afresh.
May the love of Jesus fill you today, and may we love one another as He has loved us—for His glory and as a witness to the world.
In Christ,
