Daily Reflections & Journal Prompts

In They Speak with Other Tongues, John Sherrill follows a path of transformation from skepticism to participation in the life of the Spirit. Just like Sherrill, we are also on a path of transformation in this mystical upper room, and today we are more than halfway there. Looking back from day 1, what has the Lord done in your heart? Has He increased your longing for Him? Has He revealed Himself to you in new ways? Has He called out sin in your life to draw you to repentance and freedom? Has He peeled back layers of doubt, fear, indifference? Write a prayer of thanksgiving for what the Lord has given you in these days thus far.

On day 1, one of the reflection questions was: “Do you believe this same promise [of baptism in the Holy Spirit] is for the church today? Do you believe it is for you?” We have touched on this theme every day of our journey, praying that the Lord will reveal more deeply to us that this promise is indeed for every follower of Jesus, throughout history and throughout the world. Think back over the last few days and jot down any insights the Lord has given you, or any ways in which He has transformed your thinking on this question.

After Peter assures the crowds (and all of us) that we can receive the gift of the Holy Spirit, he continues in Acts 2:39, “For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.” Paul emphasizes this point in 1 Corinthians 12:13: “For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body - Jews or Greeks, slaves or free - and all were made to drink of one Spirit.” Once we believe that this promise is for us, we also believe that it is for those around us and those far from us, those who are like us and those who are different. Have you discovered a greater unity with brothers and sisters in Christ, particularly with those who might practice their faith in a way that is different from yours? In what ways is this unity still a challenge in your life?
