Daily Reflections & Journal Prompts

  • Read 2 Timothy 1:6-7 - “For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands, for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.” What does it mean to “fan into flame the gift of God?” What is the opposite of the spirit of fear, according to verse 7? Mary mentioned a “boldness that comes from receiving a love beyond all telling.” And then she describes that love as “a love beyond human power.” How do these verses and Mary’s statements help us to understand God’s call to boldness in our lives?

  • Mary describes David Wilkerson as “someone who simply said ‘yes’ to a prompting of the Holy Spirit.” How do we hear and recognize a prompting as coming from the Holy Spirit?

  • Mary acknowledges that sometimes when the Holy Spirit is prompting her in a particular direction, she often responds with “a whole list of reasons why what God is telling me can’t be the right thing, and I can’t be the right person to do what He’s asking.” Does this statement resonate with you? Where might the Holy Spirit be leading you into something that feels socially risky, inconvenient, or unimpressive, but fully rooted in His Love and His Word? This might be a small step, such as calling a friend who is struggling, as Mary suggested. What might obedience cost you (comfort, image, time, control, being misunderstood)? With a sincere heart, take that cost into prayer, and ask the Lord for the strength to obey the leading of the Holy Spirit. Then observe what blessings follow, both in your life and in other people’s lives.

Daily Scripture

“For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control” (2 Tim 1:7).

“‘And now, Lord, look upon their threats and grant to your servants to continue to speak your word with all boldness, while you stretch out your hand to heal, and signs and wonders are performed through the name of your holy servant Jesus.’ And when they had prayed, the place in which they were gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and continued to speak the word of God with boldness” (Acts 4:29-31).
