Synopsis

On the night before His crucifixion, Jesus prayed a prayer that still echoes across the Church today: 'That they may all be one.' (John 17)

Featuring Francis Chan and Christian leaders from across denominations, That They May Be One is a powerful docudrama exploring how the Holy Spirit has been quietly working across generations to answer that prayer.

The film uncovers a remarkable story of God's providence unfolding for more than a century. From the urgent prayers of St. Elena Guerra, which inspired Pope Leo XIII to consecrate the twentieth century to the Holy Spirit, to the dramatic outpouring of the Spirit in Topeka, the historic revival at Azusa Street, and the surprising awakening among Catholics at Duquesne University in 1967, a powerful thread emerges.

Through compelling testimony, historical insight, and dramatic reenactments of Pentecost and Jesus' prayer in John 17, the film reveals the Holy Spirit's work across denominational lines - calling the Church to renewal, awakening, and unity.

That They May Be One is more than a documentary - it's an invitation to rediscover the Spirit who is still moving today.

Why Unity Matters

That They May Be One explores why unity matters to Jesus, why division wounds our witness, and what it looks like to seek reconciliation with courage and love. The film pairs thoughtful commentary and lived experience with a cinematic story thread, so viewers do not just learn about unity, they feel the cost of division and the beauty of returning to one another in Christ.

Through voices from across the Christian world and moments brought to life on screen, the film invites believers to pursue unity not as a vague ideal, but as a Spirit-led call that begins in prayer and continues in everyday action.

Portraying Real-Life Events Through Reenactments

To help viewers step into the story, That They May Be One includes dramatic reenactments that portray pivotal moments of renewal and unity, alongside scenes drawn directly from Scripture. Reenactment footage includes:

  • St. Elena Guerra and Pope Leo XIII, through their letters
  • Early “baptisms of the Holy Spirit,” including Stone’s Folly and Azusa Street
  • Biblical scenes such as Jesus’ Priestly Prayer in John 17 and Pentecost

These reenactments are not included for spectacle. They are woven into the film to show that Christ’s prayer for unity has real consequences in real history, and that renewal often begins when ordinary people respond to the Holy Spirit with extraordinary trust.
